Itinerary of the Great Ocean Road trip

The Great Ocean Road in Victoria is an essential road trip experience. Someday, we’ll take you on a journey to discover the splendour of this ocean-side route, guiding you through untouched beaches, lush rainforests, and majestic limestone cliffs.

Marvel at the 12 Apostles – these magnificent rock structures are situated just off the coast of Port Campbell National Park in Victoria. Immerse yourself in the allure of this natural landscape while our expert guides share tales and the rich history that defines this remarkable shoreline.

Our journey begins as we depart Melbourne, travelling towards the Surf Coast. We’ll pass through charming coastal communities like Anglesea, Lorne, and Airey’s Inlet. There will be a pause for morning tea, an opportunity to inhale the refreshing ocean breeze and observe surfers braving the waves. Discover the reasons behind the area’s excellent surfing conditions and the necessity of wetsuits due to its closeness to Antarctica.

We’ll stop at the Great Ocean Road monument, signifying the start of the Great Ocean Road. Capture memories at the famous Memorial Arch, where you’ll learn about the soldiers who constructed this road as a tribute to their fallen colleagues. We’ll continue our journey, pausing for photo opportunities amidst more breathtaking scenery.
Throughout our trip, we’ll stop to search for wild Koalas along the Great Ocean Road. Although their presence is unpredictable, our experienced guides know the best locations for venturing into the wilderness to spot these serene creatures sleeping in their natural habitat.
We enjoy a lunch break in Apollo Bay (lasting about 45 minutes – at the guests’ expense). After you’ve explored Apollo Bay, picked up any souvenirs you desire, or indulged in some delightful ice cream, we reboard the bus for the journey to the inland Great Otway National Park.

Continuing along the Great Ocean Road, we ascend into the verdant hills of the Great Otway National Park. Our route takes us past immense Eucalyptus trees until we reach an area of Cool, Temperate Rainforest.

The change in landscape is striking as we stroll among tree ferns and admire the Myrtle Beech trees, ancient relics from when Australia was part of the supercontinent Gondwanaland. These trees offer ample shade and are a highlight of our walk. After enjoying the refreshing air, we embark on a soothing drive towards the dramatic Shipwreck Coast.

Emerging from the forest and returning to the Southern Ocean, we arrive at Port Campbell National Park, the location of the famous 12 Apostles. We allocate approximately 40 minutes here, giving you ample time to appreciate the views, wander the boardwalks, and capture stunning photographs of this wild, rugged coastline.

Further exploration in the National Park leads us to Loch Ard Gorge, a well-known Australian shipwreck site. Here, we’ll share the thrilling story of Tom and Eva and then descend to the beach to explore the caves. This area is also known for its striking rock formations, including the Island Archway, Razorback, and the ‘Salt and Pepper Shakers.’

Concluding our day of discovery, we bid farewell to the Great Ocean Road and headed inland towards Melbourne. Our route passes through farmlands and reaches the town of Colac. Here, you can have a quick dinner (at the guests’ expense) before we complete our journey, arriving in Melbourne around 8:30 pm.
